Sixto Rodriguez is a musician from Detroit, Michigan. He started life in 1942 on July 10th and is still alive today at the impressive age of 72. He was the last child of 6 and has a father who immigrated to Detroit in the 1920’s along with a group of other mexicans that were coming to the U.S in order to work in Detroit’s industries, his mother was also from Mexico. They were a working class family that lived in the poorer area of Detroit and this comes across in lots of his songs.
May 28, 2018 In November 1971, Rodriguez’s second album, Coming From Reality, was released, and like his first album, it tanked. A month after the release, Sussex dropped him from the label. After the second album failed, Rodriguez decided to take a break from music and continued to work in construction. He earned meager wages at the physically grueling work. It brings to life the elusive and unknown story of Sixto Rodriguez, popularly known as ‘Sugarman’ or ‘Rodriguez’. It addresses itself to the fiction of the tragic demise of Rodriguez and in the end the reality of where Rodriguez ended up, since his disappearance, after he recorded his last album in 1971. 00:00 - Climb up on my Music 04:54 - A most disgusting Song 09:43 - I think of You 13:08 - Heikki's suburbia bus tour 16:32 - Silver words? 18:36 - Sandrevan. In 1970 he recorded an album called “Cold Fact” and in 1971 he recorded an album called “Coming From Reality“. Unfortunately both only sold very few in the U.S and half way through making a third album Sussex Records cut him off. But in 1975 Sussex Records also closed down.
After being dropped out of the music career he swiftly moved on to his old job of doing work in houses such as renovations etc… He bought an old creaky house in Detroit from an auction for $50 (about £30). He had three daughters and soon after that he split up with his wife.
But little did he know that the name “Rodriguez” was extremely well known in South Africa (which at the time had a part tide) and (in south africa) he was known as being more famous than Elvis Presley, his albums sold over 500,000 copies and still no-one had any idea who this “Rodriguez” was until a couple of men who worked in a music store decided to go out and search for him. They set up a website and advertised it on milk cartons to try and find him but they couldn’t. However one day Sixto’s daughter somehow found out about the website and immediately contacted the campaigners to tell them that she was his daughter and to try and find out why they wanted to know who he was. After two phone conversations it had been arranged for him to go over to South Africa and perform at a concert that they set up only for him. Obviously it sold out extremely quickly and the 20,000 seat hall was fully packed full of fans that had only ever heard rumors about him committing suicide on stage in America.
After giving away most of the money that he had earnt to friends and family he went back to his house in Detroit and carried on as normal, but of course all of his friends were utterly shocked about what he told them and the pictures that he showed them.

Detroit-born Mexican-American guitarist and singer/songwriter.
Rodriguez released the solo album 'Cold Fact' on the Sussex label in 1970. The blues-funk style of his overtly sociopolitical lyrics gained him little popularity in the US, where he once performed onstage with Hispanic activists the Brown Berets. However, his music found a resonance with a fan-base in South Africa, where he became somewhat of a cult legend. He also toured Australia with the band 'Midnight Oil' during the 1980s.
Rodriguez is also known as 'Sixto Rodriguez' and was once a Motown session musician. Works include: 'Cold Fact', 'Coming From Reality', 'After The Fact' & 'Sugarman: The Best Of Rodriguez'.
Sixto's brother Jesse (aka Jesús Rodríguez) co-wrote songs for Rodríguez' catalogue and repertoire.
